05 Sep 5 Useful Instagram Tips
Instagram has exploded in popularity since it first launched in 2010. Now with more than 700 million monthly active users, including both consumers and businesses, some 70 million photos are shared on the platform every day. Having a larger Instagram following can mean more sales for your business, more views on your blog, and a stronger community for your brand. But how in the world do some people have thousands of Instagram followers?
Some businesses have been using Instagram for publicity from the start, but it wasn’t until recently that the company created a specific profile for businesses, with ever evolving features. This came alongside recent algorithms, designed to be similar to Facebook’s algorithms, allowing Instagram to present its users with more of what they find interesting and less stuff that would be considered intrusive, or ‘spammy’.
So it could become increasingly difficult for a business to stand out in coming months. But with a little creativity and the right support, it is possible to maintain and build upon your Instagram growth – here are 5 Useful Instagram Tips you can do to start making your brand more discoverable on this photo-sharing platform.
1 | Publish Higher Quality Images
The quality of your posts is extremely important. Instagram is all about visual engagement. Bright, colorful, light, inspirational and engaging images is what they are looking for. If you’re uploading dull, dark and frankly uninspiring content, then they’re going to scroll right past without giving your updates a second look. Stay away from charts, graphics, screenshots of spreadsheets (Forex traders take note!) or messy overloaded info-graphic style posts!
Use your smart-phone as the photos can link to apps that make editing them much easier – or hire yourself a photographer who knows what they are doing for lifestyle shoots and product shots, and then work on your basic day-to-day images yourself.
Here are some basic tips for taking better Instagram photos with your smartphone:
- Get up close; new cameras can focus and capture amazing details.
- Crop pictures instead of zooming, as this might make images grainy
- Don’t apply a filter “just because”
- Don’t add artificial blur; go with what your camera does
- Avoid using flash
- Try different angles
- Focus on one subject at a time
- Be interesting, funny, and sharable
2 | Geotag your photos.
Geotagging your photos simply means you tag it with a location. So if you are posting a photo of that amazing beach, or on-trend restaurant or city you recently visited? Geotag it!
That way, other people who used the same geotag can see your photo and potentially follow you – Instagram followers like to share things with each other, engage more than other networks and follow when they can see a similar mindset or aspire to the story you sell.
3 | Link your Instagram account to your other networks
Not rocket science this one! Simply, this will help your followers on other networks discover your Instagram account — and proceed to follow you there, too!
If you want more of your audience to discover your brand on Instagram, then make every effort to cross-promote it across other channels, both on and offline.
- Offer promotional stickers with products or include them in giveaways
- Share your images and videos on other social channels and point back to your Instagram account
- Include your Instagram account in email signatures with a call-to-action to follow
- Include calls-to-action in your content marketing
- Post printed badges or stickers around your location (if you’re a brick and mortar business)
4 | Run a contest
Collaborate with other Instagram users, people who you might like to work with or already do to give something away. It doesn’t have to be huge but it has to be something your followers or potential followers might be interested in.
Need some ideas on how to run this? How about have users repost a specific image and tag you in the caption. Or ask them to use your hashtag on their own images. You could even try a loop giveaway, if you want really try something different.
5 | Socialise
One of the most successful ways to get noticed on Instagram is to engage with people. There are reasons its called ‘social’ media!
Respond to comments you receive. Browse your followers and start engaging with relevant people, especially influencers. Comment on other peoples work – and rather than responding with something flat like “cute dress”, try to leave authentic comments that encourage them to post more posts, and to engage with you in return!
By responding to people and commenting on their images, you’ll gain regular followers who appreciate your natural (non-promotional) engagement.
